WELCOME! THIS YEAR WE CONTINUE WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY STAND-ALONE MATCHES AMONGST THE COMPETING SCHOOLS.

EVENT FORMAT: 

 

GISSA Surfing Championships (mixed):

A team consists of 7 surfers as follows:

  • 1 designated female surfer
  • 3 Under 16 surfers (as at 31 December 2023) must be born 2008 or later
  • 3 Under 19 surfers (as at 31 December 2023) must be born 2005 or later

 

GISSA Female Surfing Championships:

A team consists of 4 surfers as follows:

  • 1 Under 16 surfers (as at 31 December 2023) must be born 2008 or later
  • 3 Under 19 surfers (as at 31 December 2023) must be born 2005 or later

Please note: the female team can be made up of all Under 16 aged surfers if required.

 

Competition Format GISSA Surfing Championships (mixed):

  1. Each heat of 50min minutes [length determined by Convenors]
  2. Each surfer will catch 2 waves and return to the designated area to tag the next team member.
  3. One designated surfer will be nominated prior to the heat/final and is permitted to select 1 wave to score Double Points by signalling immediately when his ride on that wave concludes.
  4. The winning school team will be decided by adding the points scored for all rides of the team at the end of the heat/final.
  5. The team can compete in any order, but the order must be given to the Head Judge prior to the commencement of the heat/final.

 

Competition Format GISSA Female Surfing Championships:

  1. Each heat of 30 minutes [length determined by Convenors]
  2. Each surfer will catch 2 waves and return to the designated area to tag the next team member.

Timeline and draw

  • 8:30-9:30am Students arriving before 10am may have a warm-up surf supervised by their own school staff
  • 9:50am Students arrive with event briefing held at this time.
  • School teams will be given two opportunities to surf on the day, competing in a Semi-Final initially then a Final as follows:

 

GISSA Surfing Championships

Semi-Final 1 @ 10am – St Ignatius; Kardinia #1; Christian College #2 and Geelong Lutheran

  • Sem-Final 2 @ 11am – Geelong College; Christian College #1; Kardinia #2 and Iona
  • Consolation Final @ 12pm – 3rd & 4th ranked teams from SF1, and 3rd & 4th ranked teams from SF2
  • GISSA 2023 Championship Final @1pm – 1st & 2nd ranked teams from SF1, and 1st & 2nd ranked teams from SF2

 

GISSA Female Surfing Championships

  • Heat 1 @ 10:30am – St Ignatius, Kardinia, Geelong College, Christian College and Geelong Lutheran
  • Heat 2 @ 12:15pm – St Ignatius, Kardinia, Geelong College, Christian College and Geelong Lutheran
  • Team that has the highest combined points from heats 1 and 2 are the winning school.
  • 1:45pm Presentations
  • 2pm Buses/students leave

OFFICIALS FOR GISSA SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Winning team per Heat goes through to the next stage

  • Water safety person on the beach and another person watching from above – communication through two-way radio on the day.
  • CCG competition flags, vests, marquee etc to be used
  • First Aid provided by Emergency Medical Response Group Victoria as per other GISSA events (costs shared amongst competing schools)
  • Competing schools to bring their own school banner/flag, but no marquees as we only have a permit for one
