IGGYS RULE THE SCHOOL IN AFL
St. Ignatius once again rules the school when it comes to AFL.
The College’s Senior Male Team officially put the exclamation mark on a perfect campaign of football with an emphatic 82-point win the Grand Final of the Division 1 tournament against Iona College Geelong.
St. Ignatius went through their season undefeated, winning all four of their matches by an average winning margin of 97.8 points and an incredible percentage of 635.
The College based on the Bellarine Peninsula is in the middle of a rich era of talent, with the School’s Inter Boys Team also winning the GISSA Championship this year.
It was a case of third time lucky for the boys in red, white and blue, after losing the Grand Final in the Senior Boys competition to Christian College Geelong over the last two years.
St. Ignatius will now do what the CCG Eagles did last year, move on to the AFL Victoria ‘Herald Sun Shield’ Division 2 Event coming up in Term 3, where ‘Iggs will take on the best team from other school sporting associations from around the state in a one-day round robin tournament in Melbourne.
Christian College were the only Team to get within 11 goals of St. Ignatius, however the two-time defending champions were not able to reach the Grand Final after they lost to Iona College in what turned out to be a decisive result in the make-up of the tournament.
Congratulations to all the Teams who competed in the first ever ‘GISSA AFL Season’, which lasted over three months and included each school playing four games each across Term 2 and Term 3.
The four-quarter matches, played mostly in the afternoon between and 1pm and 4pm, consisted of St. Ignatuis Geelong, Iona College, Kardinia International College, Christian College Geelong and Covenant College Geelong.
