2024 SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Could we be seeing a changing of the guard in GISSA Basketball?
That’s certainly what Iona College Geelong will be hoping, after their boys in purple claimed the School’s first ever Senior Male Basketball Title this year.
It was an incredible achievement by Iona considering that, as a relatively new school, the College does not yet have Year 12 students.
That means that Iona’s team for the 2024 Championships was made up of Year 11 and 10 students, providing an encouraging glimpse into the future for the College.
What made this performance even more memorable was the quality of competition Iona had to overcome to claim their first trophy at AWA Stadium.
The semi-final between St. Ignatius and Christian College Geelong was a cracker, with a student from St. Ignatius knocking down a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the corner with less than 2.7 seconds remaining to win the game for his team.
On the opposite side of the draw, Iona went through their qualifying games undefeated and then advanced to the Grand Final with a win over Kardinia International College in the semi-final.
That set up a highly-anticipated showdown with St. Ignatius in the tournament decider, with the Ionians pulling away late to win by just 5 points in a low-scoring, pressure-filled game, 19-14.
Not only was the standard of play exceptionally high – the three-point shooting and dunking were particular highlights for spectators – the spirit that every school brought to the competition was exemplary.
Experienced onlookers commented to GISSA organisers that the sportsmanship showed by students, both in the male and female divisions, was the best they had ever seen from teenagers, which was so pleasing to hear because that spirit is the trademark of GISSA – as signified by our Association’s ‘handshake’ logo.
