2023 CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP

OVERVIEW

GEELONG COLLEGE HAS BROKEN THE DOMINANCE OF KARDINIA INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE BY WINNING THE THIRD AND FINAL GISSA MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2023.

THE GEELONG COLLEGE CLINCHED THEIR FIRST MAJOR TITLE SINCE 2016 WITH A SPIRITED WIN AT THIS YEAR’S CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BARWON VALLEY FUN PARK ON MAY 31.

Kardinia came into this Event aiming to create history by winning a ‘Grand Slam’ of the Major Championships, having previously won the Athletics Championships earlier this Term and the Swimming back in Term One.

However it was the Geelong College who emerged victorious, taking out the Overall Title, as well as the Junior Male Section, which include Results from 13, 14 and 15 Years Age Groups (mostly Year 7 to Year 9 Students).

It was also a rewarding day for students at Christian College Geelong. The CCG Eagles claimed both the Senior Male and Senior Female Shields, which takes in Results from the 16 Years and ‘Open’ Age Groups – mostly Year 9 to Year 12 Students  – from both Gender Categories.

Although they did not end up rewriting the history books, Kardinia did not leave empty-handed, with their female runners from the 13, 14 and 15 Years Age Group popping to win the Junior Female Shield. Kardinia finished in third spot overall, just behind the CCG Eagles in the Runner-Up position and The Geelong College in first.

This year was the first time in recent memory that this Event was held at a neutral Venue. Usually hosted by one of our Member Schools, this year the Cross Country Event moved to the Barwon Valley Fun Park.

The fast, flat ‘Figure 8’ style track proved to be a hit with the students, schools and families, and it appears likely that the 2024 version of this Event will again be brought back to this Venue.

Another key factor in the success of this year’s Event was the addition of an independent company, ‘Tomato Timing’, to run the Timing and Results for the Championships.

All students ran with a ‘Timing Bib’ and a ‘Runner ID Number’ provided by Tomato, which produced immediate results straight to the computer-based scoring system.

The results were then quickly uploaded onto a specifically designed page on the Tomato Timing Website, where students immediately could look up their time and placing.
